The Port of Long Beach was named “Best Green Seaport” in the world at the 32nd annual Asian Freight & Supply Chain Awards, which took place in Shanghai. Hosted by Asia Cargo News, the awards reflect annual polling of thousands of freight transportation professionals, and recognized the port’s Green Port Policy which has led to major improvements in air and water quality through initiatives within the Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) and the Technology Advancement Program (TAP).
“The Port of Long Beach is thrilled to be named the Best Green Seaport. This award reflects the continuing serious commitment of our Board of Harbor Commissioners and staff to improving air and water quality, and serving as a model of environmental sustainability for seaports around the world,” said Long Beach Harbor Commission President Lou Anne Bynum.
“We have shown at the Port of Long Beach that environmental progress goes hand in hand with operational excellence, and that a green port is an efficient, competitive port,” said Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero. “We’re pleased to be recognized for our efforts in making a greener planet.”
As California’s eleven ports stretch the entire coastline, and include inland ports as well, it was refreshing to have students from San Francisco to San Diego submit essays. Tim Schott, CAPA Executive Director elaborated, “There were several very well written essays, and it was difficult to choose just three winners. It’s refreshing to see the next generation of young people engaged and interested in how our ports are leading the state’s economy and environmental efforts.”
