Rep. Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) recently visited the Port of Humboldt Bay to observe dredging operations in progress easing shallow water conditions. Heavy rainfall during the last winter has led to sediment deposits in the bay restricting larger vessels from entering the port. The Congressman acknowledged the importance of dredging in order to support the economy of Humboldt County.
“Maintenance of Humboldt Bay’s entrance and shipping channel for both safety and the viability of commercial activity is one of my top priorities and a key reason why I successfully fought to join the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee,” said Huffman when CAPA staff reached out to his office for comment. “The Army Corps of Engineers recognizes the importance of dredging here for both safe passage of deep draft ships, fuel barges, commercial and recreational boating and fishing, and the potential for increasing shipping from the bay. I am pleased to work with the Corps and the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District on this important ongoing project,” he added.
